WHEN YOU BLOG

IMG_4829
Lately, whenever my friends come into my room, they see something new and gasp "Ah that's lovely... was it sent for your blog?" Yes is usually my answer since I'm trying not to spend too much lately, saving up for future adventures, travels, and whatever the life of a musician will be like when I move to Ireland. And now that I think of those two weeks in Ireland... alcohol. There certainly were a lot of evenings out drinking beer (Anthony) and Baileys or wine (me)! While I do love talking about Ireland, back to the point. Then they go "Man, I wish I got all these cool things! I should start a blog..." But then they don't. Now I'm thinking, Wait... why not? Anyone who doesn't have a blog can start one but it does take work. Now, if you're willing to put in the hours and hours of work, then... I think you'll realize it's actually quite enjoyable! (I hope this goes without saying but don't write a blog just to get free stuff, that's not the point. For me, this blog is a way to keep my family up to date; to put together outfits; to have a little corner of the internet all to myself where I can share things that make me happy with the world; to share my music, etc)
I've only recently started blogging (recently: in the past 10 months) but I feel like I've learned a lot already and would like to give a little bit of advice to new bloggers! Just things I've noticed while blogging... So, to all my friends & readers & anyone who stumbles upon this post...
  • "Study" your favorite blogs
For at least six months, I worked mostly on making the blog nice to look at. Personally, I usually don't read a blog if there is too much going on! I like it simple. Find out why you like the blogs you read, what catches your eye... I think my two favorite blogs are Bleubird and Skunkboy. Here are some more beautiful blogs: Sincerely, Kinsey, Foxtail + Fern, & Rockstar Diaries. Go study!

  • Picture Quality
Use flickr or some other website to upload pictures. One of the best pieces of advice was given to me by Katie from Skunkboy Creatures. She told me she had a flickr Pro account because the pictures you upload using Blogger aren't of good great quality. I didn't get a Pro account at first (you have to pay $25 a year) but you can only upload a certain amount of pictures a month, so I would have to find other websites to use... And I hated it. Flickr is so easy and I felt so comfortable using it. Plus, I was wasting SO much time trying to upload all the pictures to different websites... a nightmare! I finally decided to get Flickr Pro and I love it. So so easy and the pictures are perfect. If you want to compare two posts with pictures uploaded through Blogger and pictures uploaded through Flickr: Post w/Blogger Post w/Flickr See the difference?? Like many, I'm not in love with the idea of spending money but you should realize that "you have to spend money to make money"... If you want people to sponsor your blog, you can't give them low-quality pictures...

  • More advice concerning pictures
(Some of it is just my personal opinion.)
    1. Get rid of the border around your pictures. My pictures had that annoying border around them, and I've seen many blogs that have them too - not all do though. If you do, I'd get rid of it... You don't have to... The Blonde Salad has them and it doesn't stop people from going on her blog daily. But my favorite blogs don't have those white borders with the shadow around their pictures...
    2. Observe what type of pictures these bloggers take. For example, their "What I wore today" posts are usually always outside... It's got to do with lighting and backgrounds. Ex 1  Ex 2  Ex 3 I guess this goes with the first piece of advice "Study your favorite blogs"!
    3. Finally, tell me if you see a difference between these two posts: Vintage dress / Mother & Daughter Do you see it...? Picture size! I didn't know how to make all the pictures the same size!! Now I do simple math a/b = x/c which gives you x = ac/b All that is width and height... For me, width is 640. All I do is try to make the portrait pictures' width 640 too. If you want two portrait pictures side by side, I believe you need photoshop if you don't want to lose the quality.
That's all for today... I hope it helps! Cheers! Vx

How do you upload a photo on your blog using flickr?

Valentina Duracinsky said...

Hey Katelyne! If you use Blogger, this is what you do...
Choose your image on Flickr, click "Share" and copy the HTML code. Then on Blogger, edit the HTML on your post (next to Compose) and paste the code. Make sure the image was large or extra large and then just make it smaller on Compose so that the quality is good. I believe that is all! Vx

Of course! If you're serious about your blog, the flickr $25/year fee is totally worth it.

These are really great tips! I never thought to utilize Flickr, to me it was just another form of social media that I would have to keep up with but the photos look great!
