Parisian Style // 05 1

I've worn this outfit many, many times. Maybe with different scarves. But yeah, it would seem I have many "go to" items in my closet, including those boots, those jeans, that t-shirt, that coat, and that bag... all of 'em are my lazy I'm not going to put any thought into getting dressed today but also not look like a trashbag items.

I collaborated with Blowfish Shoes a few years ago. Their shoes are fantastic. I was always happy to receive them in the mail and wear them every day because they are incredibly comfortable, which is most important on my list. I'm really loving some of their shoes this year. These, these and these would be welcome in my closet any day.

I wore this lazy outfit to go to lunch with the fabulous Rozena. Such a hard worker, that one. She does freelance writing but also takes good pictures. (She took these. Thanks Rozena!) After lunch we parted ways – she went to find a cafe with wifi, and I walked around and around and around until my iphone was out of battery (I assume from listening to too much Juan Luis Guerra on YouTube) and I went to the Moose to charge it, do some writing, convince all my lovely people there to go dancing with me this weekend. I'd say I spend one hour a day dancing. This is necessary

Naples: Food Diary 1 Naples da Michele

That's me and the second pizza I ate that weekend. I ate the whole thing. Even the crust which I usually never eat. No, folks, this is pizza in Napoli. This is pizza at da Michele. It is heaven

The truth is we didn't have time to try other places for pizza. I went through many lists online. People recommended Starita, Sorbillo, di Matteo, Lombardi, Trianon, port'Alba... but I was too afraid to try something new. We knew we loved da Michele, so why risk eating a less than perfect pizza on one of the few nights we were there? da Michele the first night, da Michele the last night. Better safe than sorry.

Look at that menu. Just look at it! Only two pizzas offered - margherita and marinara. I've yet to try the marinara but I am sure that on a night when you don't want cheese (LOL), this will do just fine. Their sauce was amazing. And those prices. I love eating in Italy. Then again I live in Paris. I love eating anywhere else because everything is cheaper.

The other place we remembered to go back to was La Vecchia Cantina. If you scroll down in my Instagram feed (still easy now since I only have about 100 pictures) you'll find that the two first pictures are of pizza from da Michele and then the exact same thing I'm eating in the picture above. Grilled seafood. (Again, I went with what I knew and loved. I'm not that great with change, could you guess!?)

Winter. The perfect weather for cold ice-cream. Especially Gay-Odin ice-cream.

Like eating crêpes as street food in Paris... Pizza in Naples! I'm still amazed.

This was my favorite discovery. Last time we went, I didn't do any research. This time I cared. This time I read all about 'sfoglietelle calde' and how they are this really delicious warm ricotta pastry. So I tried it and holy $%&@ it is good. Oh it is GOOD. I want to recreate it. I bet I could make a version of it just using puff pastry from the shop, ricotta, candied orange... that's all I got. I'll look it up.

If you go to Naples, make sure you know where you will eat every single meal. You don't go to Naples for the city, you go for the food. Trust me.

A mix of iphone photos and camera photos... I shouldn't even specify that anymore, I do it every single time, huh? My dad and I were in Naples for three and a half days last weekend. It was good and relaxing and such a delicious weekend. (All the food pictures are coming, folks. There's a whole post about the places we went to and the food we ate. Remember, two whole pizzas I inhaled at da Michele.) Most of the time I was quiet and in somewhat of a mood but the good thing about walking all day is that you can just be quiet and look at the sights and think. At least that's how my dad and I go about it. Most of the time, we're good travel buddies.

The gloomy, somber mood was probably a mix of anxiety over finding jobs, trying to count calories but also treat myself (stupid, the whole point of the weekend is FOOD, I said to myself over and over again), getting very little sleep the first night, having too many thoughts and worries. Done with college, move home, have zero plans. What do you do when you have nothing and everything at the same time? I was talking to a friend and he asked me how freedom felt. It feels terrifying. I have nothing, I said. At the moment when you have everything in front of you, ironic, he said. Doh! He's right. But so am I. Having the possibility to do anything doesn't mean you'll get or be given the chance to do everything. What do I focus on? What do I want? What do I do? More like, what will I get the chance to do?

So my mind has been racing for the past few weeks. Pizza helped. Isn't it funny how pizza always helps? Magical powers in cheese and tomato sauce... I've been working non-stop since I've been back, and my breaks are only to go grocery shopping, play the guitar for ten minutes, or to declutter the closet and clean my room so the bed is actually visible. It's 85% there. Most things have a place "art stuff here, books here, yarn here, underwear here...", and I've gotten rid of a bunch of old things which feels great. The minute my room is 95% there, I feel like I will be able to get more important stuff done. The truth? I'd like to focus on music. Which is scary and also heartbreaking for many reasons I won't go into.

The weather in Naples was so much better than it was in Pennsylvania. When my grandparents came to pick me up in Philly after I got back from Colombia, my body was in shock. Cali is SO warm (and very hot in the early afternoon) that I had completely forgotten how cold it can get. And, good god, the northeast is awful this winter. But Naples was good. It was sunny, until the last day when it rained like crazy. We had two things to do that morning: get me a warm sfogliatella and find my dad some cheese to bring back. We were successful, and didn't get too wet. It was only pouring when we were inside. Things work out sometimes.
